The experiences of some countries of EU show a good practice in the introduction of modules related to the functioning of the EU to faculties in the pre-accession period. Regarding this, there are good examples of agricultural faculties introducing courses that enhance the level of knowledge about the functioning of the European Union as an organization. The courses are elaborating the CAP of EU, its genesis, the reforms and the basic directions of operation and support.
Jean Monnet Module „Agricultural Regulations of European Union“ is accredited as an elective course in the final year of undergraduate studies of all study programs at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Novi Sad. The module provides basic knowledge for students of:
- Establishment and development of the European Union;
- EU institutions;
- The European economy;
- Agricultural resources and agrarian structure of the EU;
- Common Agricultural Policy and its reform;
- Trade of agri-food products between Serbia and the EU;
- Introduction to the functioning of the key EU regulations in specific areas of agriculture.
The main goal of this module is to present guidelines through regulations and functioning of the European Union for students of all study programs at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Novi Sad, and to deliver basic facts about the system of agriculture in the EU, the Common Agricultural Policy and rural development policy. Module „Agricultural Regulations of European Union“ has all students of the Faculty of Agriculture in Novi Sad as a basic target group, especially students in the final year of study who do not have enough knowledge regarding the topic of EU agriculture.
This module is of great importance since the Republic of Serbia, as a candidate for the EU membership, has already opened some chapters of pre-accession negotiations with the EU and the opening of the chapter on agriculture and rural development is expected very soon. The module has a direct impact on the students due to their new knowledge about the functioning of the European Union and its specific areas. Students who attend this module are future professionals who – upon graduation – will be able to apply their gained knowledge in their companies and local communities.
